By Dorothy J. Gentry, Sports Editor, Texas Metro News

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was killed when he was hit by a dump truck while walking on a South Florida highway. Haskins was stranded on the highway and was looking for gas when the incident occurred in the early hours of April 9th.

He would have turned 25 on May 3. News of the former Ohio State star quarterback’s death was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter who was told by Haskins’ agent of his passing. Haskins was in Florida training and putting in offseason work with several other players for the Steelers.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement:

“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so, a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”

While at Ohio State, Haskins set numerous Big 10 conference records and finished third in the 2018 Heisman Trophy voting. He was drafted 15th overall in the 2019 NFL draft by Washington but was released during his second season in 2020. He was picked up by the Steelers last year and was competing for a starting job with the team.
