Long before he became a Supreme Court justice, Clarence Thomas told a story at a public gathering that still sounds shocking years later.
At the time, Thomas was a relatively unknown conservative who had paid his way to attend a conference of Black conservatives just before Ronald Reagan entered the White House in 1981.
