City of Tampa's MLK Day Parade

The City of Tampa’s Martin Luther King Day Parade is an exciting component of a week of activity, celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King, and displaying the beautiful diversity and community spirit of the Tampa Bay Area. Thousands line the streets of a two-mile route winding through East Tampa beginning at Cuscaden Park and ending at Middleton High School. This parade gets bigger and better every year and attracts bands from as far away as Kingston, Jamaica. Music To My Feet: Sneaker Drive

There are nearly 3000 documented homeless students attending schools in Hillsborough County. It never occurred to most that something as seemingly simple as access to sneakers could be a barrier to education. That’s why in an ongoing effort, HCC, USF

Athletics Dept., Hillsborough County Public Schools, Simply Healthcare, and Volunteer Ministries is working with Project LINK, a Tampa-based nonprofit, to support their “Music To My Feet” sneaker campaign - A Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day Project hosted by Plant High School.

Implementation of Constitutional Amendment 4

The Club will sponsor a Community Panel on Implementation of Amendment 4, the Constitutional Amendment passed in November which restores voting rights to former felons who have completed their sentences. Our panel includes elected officials from the Florida Legislature, Lawyers who have been involved with the Amendment since the petition phase, Persons who are directly impacted by the Amendment and who will seek restoration of their rights and other relevant persons. We are hoping for a community discussion which informs us all and guides voter registration drives in 2019. A brief business meeting will precede the Panel discussion. All are welcome. In collaboration with “Legacy Week 2019” and USF St. Petersburg , The Florida Holocaust Museum is hosting Dr. Susannah Heschel, Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College and daughter of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, confidant and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was Rabbi Heschel who brought Dr. King and his message to a wide Jewish audience, and it was Dr. King who made Rabbi Heschel a central figure in the struggle for civil rights.
