In a key year-end special election, West Des Moines Council member Renee Hardman won a state Senate seat by a commanding margin, denying Iowa Republicans a return to a supermajority and marking a historic milestone as the first Black woman elected to the Senate. 

Democrat Renee Hardman was elected to the Iowa state Senate on Tuesday in a year-end special election, denying Republicans from reclaiming two-thirds control of the chamber.
