AUSTIN, Texas — Native Land Pod’s Angela Rye elevated the extreme measures taken by Republican state lawmakers in Texas during a Breaking News episode on Monday. Rye conducted a one-on-one interview with Texas State Representative Nicole Collier who is now at the heart of the battle over redistricting in the state. Collier was threatened with arrest if she attempted to exit the premises without signing a “permission slip” granting state troopers authority to monitor her movements. Collier is in day two of the standoff.
“What Nicole is doing is more than symbolic,” Rye said. “It’s a refusal to normalize gerrymandering and voter suppression, and a demand that elected leaders be accountable to the people—not to power.”
Republican leaders say the police monitoring is necessary to prevent Democrats from staging another walkout, as they did earlier this summer to block the redistricting effort. Watch full interview here.
