Black Media Titans Clash: Fact-Checking Feud Devolves to Personal Attacks

A high-profile feud between media veteran Roland Martin and new media giant Charlamagne Tha God has sparked a broader conversation about the role of new media and conduct within Black media circles, some dimensions of which were analyzed recently on The Clay Cane Show

The conflict began when Martin used his show, Roland Martin Unfiltered, to address what he described as misinformation by Charlamagne on The Breakfast Club concerning the government shutdown and Affordable Care Act subsidies. According to Martin, Charlamagne lacked the “full scope” of what Democrats were requesting.

Charlamagne dismissed the fact-check as “just a fat Ron Martin lie” in the Breakfast Club’s “Donkey of the Day” segment. He implied that Martin, whom he called a “hater,” was motivated by jealousy over his media success, often texting him to ask to appear on The Breakfast Club.

Martin quickly dismissed the personal attacks, stating: “I don’t give a damn what you say about my weight… because none of that sh** matters”. Martin emphasized that he is focused on “confronting larger issues at play that have a profound and significant impact on our community,” adding that he fights on behalf of Black people at all levels.

Martin also distinguished his work in Black-owned media from The Breakfast Club, which is Black-targeted but owned by iHeart Radio.

Analyzing the spat on his program, host Clay Cane criticized the tone of Charlamagne’s response, calling it “very Trumpian” to target someone’s physicality. Cane stated that such personal attacks are “antithetical to the legacy of Black media.”

Guest Jason Johnson – a journalism professor at Morgan State University and frequent contributor on MS NOW – noted that many people are afraid to criticize Charlamagne because they want “access to his audience.” Johnson acknowledge Charlamagne’s dominance in the new media space and called Martin “a media icon,” crediting Martin for proactively facilitating the career paths of many African Americans in the media.

Johnson also challenged Charlamagne’s focus as misaligned with the moment. He concluded, “We have a government that is at war with black and brown people. That’s the larger issue that Roland is talking about… and you got time to call somebody fat. What are we doing?”

He stressed that media disagreements should not become public conflicts focused on physical appearance, especially when Black media overall is struggling for survival. Click here to watch full video.
