If you’re inspired and want to make a difference in your community, take note that the nomination period opens July 18 for local offices in the November 8 General Election.
The nomination period ends at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, with an extension to Wednesday, Aug. 17, if an incumbent officeholder does not file. Seats open for nomination include:
- Marin and Sonoma county boards of education, two community college districts and 17 school districts
- Special districts including community services districts, fire protection districts, the Marin Healthcare District, public utility districts, recreation districts, the Marin Resource Conservation District, sanitary districts, and water districts
- City and town councils in Belvedere, Corte Madera, Fairfax, Larkspur, Novato, San Anselmo, San Rafael, Sausalito, and Tiburon (municipal candidates must file nomination documents with their respective city clerk)

Except for municipal offices, prospective candidates may pick up and file nomination papers at the Marin County Elections Department, Suite 121, Marin County Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael. The hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12. Candidates can submit their application form online as well.
