Volunteer Opportunity - St. Petersburg Housing Authority Hearing Officers

The St. Petersburg Housing Authority (SPHA) operates a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, a rental assistance program for very-low income individuals and families funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  SPHA is in need of volunteer attorneys to act as Hearing Officers on behalf of the Housing Authority regarding the termination of assistance of Section 8 Voucher program participants.  Hearing Officers review case records, conduct informal hearings to review information and testimony provided by Section 8 Voucher program participants, and following consideration of the information provided by the program participants, make determinations whether the termination of assistance by the Housing Authority was made in accordance with HUD regulation and SPHA policy, and if the evidence presented during the informal hearing warrants overturning the Housing Authority's termination decision.  Volunteers are needed to assist the Housing Authority for an average of 4 to 6 hours, once every 3 to 4 months. ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Reporting to the Director of Early Learning, Research & Training, the Head Start Training Manager is accountable for the development and implementation of training strategies, plans and processes to support Head Start/Early Head Start (HS/EHS) goals statewide. Responsible for all training programs, ensuring there are collaborative programs operating at all times, including but not limited to pre-service training, compliance training on a recurring basis, skills development training and professional development training. Participates in the HS/EHS Quality Assurance efforts. Develops a needs assessment process and creates an instructional design process with appropriate delivery methods and post-training evaluations; Conducts needs assessment surveys statewide and by grant location at least on an annual basis; Formulates statewide training program based on survey results and in collaboration with Head Start Directors and statewide senior leadership team; Coordinates efforts to ensure the full utilization of all site training facilities, processes, resources and equipment; Acts as point of contact for training vendors, reviews contracts for training services and venues; Keeps informed on legislation impacting Head Start’s training obligations. Works closely with management to ensure that policies, programs and processes are developed, implemented, communicated and consistently administered in compliance with organizational objectives, Head Start performance standards, and with relevant laws and regulations; Develops “full package” approach (progression by role) career paths for all positions in consonance with Professional Development Plans; Responds and resolves training issues and questions from management and employees on the application and interpretation of processes, Head Start and Lutheran Services Florida policies and current legislation pertaining to training; In collaboration with Human Resources, may make recommendations for solutions to performance issues through use of currently available resources of new training sources; Continuously seeks and supports new approaches, practices and processes to improve the efficiency of training services. Personally conducts training and workshops as needed; Leads, motivates and develops Training team member statewide. Provides assistance to all Head Start locations in the training area as needed.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Training & Development, Adult Education, Curriculum Instruction & Design, Human Resources or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Experience: Five years of directly related experience in the design and delivery of training programs in an educational and/or non-profit environment. Head Start experience preferred. Must have practical experience in both technical and non-technical training. American Red Cross Summer Youth Program Accepting Middle School & High School Volunteers

he American Red Cross Youth Council Summer program is a great opportunity for middle school and high school students to gain leadership experience while teaching life-saving skills to children in Hillsborough and Pinellas County. The Summer Program will start June 14th and end at the beginning of August. To be a part of the Youth Council Summer program, youth need to complete an application, go through an interview with their peers, complete the leadership training camp (cost $20), and commit to teaching at least three times over the summer.

Florida Missing Children’s Day Statewide Essay Contest

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Department of Education have partnered for the annual Florida Missing Children’s Day Statewide Essay Contest. This year’s essay contest theme is “Think Before You Click: Staying Safe on the Internet and Social Media.”

The contest was designed to promote safety awareness among Florida’s children and is open to all fifth-grade students in Florida schools. One winning essay will be selected from each school and the FDLE Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse will choose a statewide winner. The statewide winner will read his or her essay during the Florida Missing Children’s Day ceremony on Sept. 8, 2014 at the Florida Capitol and will receive a trophy, a $100 cash award and a Universal Studios Very Important Person package.
