Wearable Concrete Workshop with Tom McCarthy

Concrete is a ubiquitous material that is usually associated with large scale objects. This class will investigate several methods of incorporating this material into small scale wearable objects. We will use traditional metalsmithing techniques to create forms to pour a commercially available concrete mix into. We will also make a simple mold. This material is rich with aesthetic possibilities including texturing and embedding and we will discuss jewelry scale terrazzo. Click here for more information.

Keep St. Pete Lit is elated that Fantastic Ekphrastic is now celebrating its third year at Soft Water Studios with Bob Devin Jones directing. It’s an experience that has riveted audiences for two years in a row. “Ekphrastic” is from a Greek word that means a ‘written commentary on a visual work of art.’ At Fantastic Ekphrastic, a fundraiser for non-profit literary arts organization Keep St. Pete Lit, local actors perform poetry, prose and plays inspired by the artwork on display. Florida Hardest-Hit Fund-Pricipal Reduction Program

2nd Annual Black Arts Festival

The festival will open on Friday evening at Studio @620 with “Dancing Like Home”, directed by Joyce Guy. There will be a meet and greet with the film maker and many other artists who will participate in the street festival on Saturday.  Opening at 620 1st Avenue So, Friday, February 24, 6 – 8PM | $10. On Saturday, February 25th Gallerie 909 will host the 2nd Annual Visual Arts festival showcasing work by local and national artists, reflecting art from the African diaspora.  This festival will take place from 11AM – 6PM on 22nd Street between 9th and 11th Avenue South.  There’s also a scheduled guided tour of the African American Heritage Trail.  The Dr. Carter G. Matthew Holler’s fascination with photography and the fashion industry led him to earn his BFA from the Ringling College Department of Photography & Imaging and pursue a career as a fashion and portrait photographer in Sarasota and New York after graduation. Heavily influenced by early to mid-twentieth century photography, Holler draws inspiration from Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe and Helmut Newton. The selection of works in the exhibition by this dynamic fashion and portrait photographer represents a wide range of his photographic approaches from 2011-2016. Click here to learn more.
